How To Keep Matte Lipsticks/ Liquid Lipsticks From Drying Out Your Lips

Wearing lipstick can be fun, creative, and really bring your entire look together. But no one likes to have dry crusty lips under their matte lipstick. Its irritating and simply not attractive! But we have some key tips and tricks that can really save the day.

The first thing that you must know is that not all lipsticks are formulated the same. Even though the overall nature of matte lipsticks are to be dryer than other formulas, some have moisturizing agents that wont suck the life out of your lips. So we always suggest doing some research, and find a brand/formula that you see works best for you.

Before we get into the “skin care” aspect of it, the most important thing that you must do is:

Drink lots of WATER!!

Lack of water can cause serious dehydration in the body. With the lips being one of the most sensitive parts of the body, it also becomes one of the parts most affected by dehydration. We recommend drinking 8 glasses of water each day to remain properly hydrated and keep the lips nice and soft.

Now that we have that part out of the way here are out 7 tips on how to keep the lips nice and soft.

1. Exfoliate

Matte lipsticks and liquid lipsticks love to settle into the lines and dry spots on your lips. By them doing so it actually accentuates those lines and makes them more prominent. You should exfoliate your lips before and after wearing a dry matte lipstick to make them look and feel smoother and softer.

2. Moisturize Ahead of Time

You need to give the moisturizer time to work and penetrate the lips. So we never suggest putting on your lipstick or liquid lipstick right after moisturizing. Apply your lip balm at the beginning of your makeup routine so that by the end when you are ready to apply your lipstick, your lips will be fully moisturized. This will also aid in your lipstick not bleeding as well.

Along with moisturizing ahead of time, keeping your lip balm on hand through out the day will greatly benefit you. A non greasy lip balm is perfect for reapplication. if you feel the need to touch up or reapply your lipstick throughout the day, give your lips some love with the moisturizer first to make sure that they stay nice and hydrated.

3. Know The Ingredients In Your Moisturizer

Some lip balms contain ingredients that we consider “masking ingredients.” These are ingredients that appear to be beneficial to you but they are not. When it comes to lip balms, those ingredients are hyaluronic acid and glycerin. They seem as though they are moisturizing agents, but as your wearing them throughout the day it is actually drying them out more than they were before. These are the type of ingredients that you want to keep away from your lips. Instead try going for more ingredients that are natural such as shea butter or beeswax. They help to retain that moisture that you need throughout the day.

4. Use A Lip Primer

Primers are going to keep matte lipstick from settling into any of the dry areas of your lips. We like to think of moisturizing primers as double sized tape, the primer sticks to your lips and the lipstick sticks to the primer which will help with longevity and smoothness. Just think of it like the functions of a face primer, it is giving your lipstick something to hang onto.

5. Use a Lip Mask

Lip masks will nourish and hydrate your lips overnight leaving them to be prepped and soft for the next morning. Because when they are properly taken care of, your beautiful healthy lips will be able to tackle the day’s matte lipstick.

6. Do Not Lick Your Lips

For as good as it feels, licking your lips is one of the worst things that you can do. Although it can momentarily soothe your lips, your saliva contains acids that are meant to break down food which can also dry out your lips. This is also taking away all of your lip's natural oils. So this is a big no, no!

7. Give Your Lips A Break

Unfortunately if you are wearing matte lipstick or liquid lipsticks everyday, your lips do not stand a chance in beating the dryness. Try giving them a break by going every other day in an effort to have them recover and repair themselves. On the off days go for something more moisturizing and hydrating.

Hopefully this will help some of you guys beat the dry lip epidemic and say hello to beautiful soft, kissable lips. If you have any other tips, tricks, or comments, please leave them down below!
